Hi there and I hope you’re doing awesome. I also hope that you’ve read all the previous tutorials carefully and applied what you learned. If you did, you should have a fully functional website by now, and all that’s missing at this point is a constant stream of hungry traffic!

The good news is, you can get highly targeted traffic to your website completely free through Google and other SEs. In fact, by now your website should already be inside Google’s index.

To check if your website is indexed, simply copy your domain URL (website address), paste it in Google embedded with double quotes, and hit search.

If the search yields results, and the results are your website’s pages, then you’re already indexed and people can find you via Google. If not, we’re going to have to get it indexed.

The quickest way to get inside Google’s index is to »ping« your newly created website. This is best done by using a free pinging web service, such as www.pingomatic.com

When you open the site, just paste in your website’s URL, check all the boxes below and click submit. This will notify a whole bunch of web properties about the existance of your website, and once that happens, it’s just a matter of time before Google finds you…

Note that it may take a couple of days before Google indexes your site, so try to be patient.

Also, if you have a Facebook or a Twitter account (or any other social media service), you can post a link to your website there as well, as Google visits these type of sites frequently.

Alright, let’s get back to getting traffic, shall we?

So if we’re going to be getting traffic from the search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc., our goal must be to climb the search-results ladder as high as possible, in order to get as much traffic as we can. If we did our keyword research right, there should be plenty of people searching for our keywords, and the competition should be fairly easy to beat.

In the previous tutorial, we have learned how to configure the onpage SEO (search engine optimization) of our website, which included setting up headings, titles, keyword density, etc.

I’ve also mentioned that there’s an offpage part of SEO, which is equally (if not more) important. Offpage basically means that we’re not going to be focusing on our website anymore, but instead we’re going to be targetting other people’s websites.

In other words, we are going to build backlinks. Backlinks are links which we’ll be creating on various web properties and pointing them back to our website.

This is best understood if you imagine the entire internet as a giant voting election. The more votes (backlinks) a website has, the more popular it is and thus Google will rank it better.

However, understand that not all backlinks are created equal!

For example, if you get a backlink from a website that is not so popular and isn’t even related to your niche, it’s not going to count as much as a backlink from an authority website which is related to your niche. In fact, one high quality link could be worth 1000s of poor quality links.

A factor that determines the backlink value of a page is called Page Rank. Page rank is a number between 0 and 10 and it simbolizes the number and quality of backlinks pointing to that page. Obviously, the higher the page rank, the better it is to get a backlink from that page.

How to get quality backlinks?

There are several methods of getting good, solid backlinks and we’re going to cover most of them in the upcoming tutorials. Some of them are going to be easy, some of them are going to require a little bit of hard work, but in the end – it will be well worth your while.

Some methods that we’re going to cover include:

1) Forum profile building
2) Blog commenting
3) Article marketing
4) Social media exposure
5) Building web 2.0 properties
6) Submitting press releases

These are all extremely powerful ways to get backlinks to your website and skyrocket it to the #1 position on Google. We’ll also cover some of the paid methods which significantly increase the rate at which your site climbs the ladder, so stay tuned for the next tutorial 

Have a great day!

While many product authors offer their own affiliate programs, I have found that using a website called »Clickbank.com« seems to get me the best results.

It’s great because it allows you to see which products are popular and sell great, and which products do not do so well. The goal is to promote the best product available.

When you choose a product to promote, you will be given a special link code, also known as your personal affiliate link, which is unique to you. When people on your website click the link, land on the merchant’s website and buy their product, you earn a commission!

Sounds easy, doesn’t it? That’s because it is easy! And here’s exactly how to set it up:

1. Visit http://www.clickbank.com and create an account

Creating an account is a pretty straightforward process. Once you’re done, you will get your login details and a pretty long auto-generated password (which you can change later).

2. Log in and click on the Marketplace link in the upper part of the homepage

Marketplace allows you to browse all the products in their system. In the search box, enter a phrase that’s related to your niche and press Enter. You’ll most likely end up with a large variety of different products that should all be related to your search query. If you don’t, change the phrase and search again until you succeed.

Now we don’t want to pick just any product. There are several things you have to know about Clickbank before you make your choice. Things like gravity and commission percentage are very important to consider if you want to have a successful campaign.

Gravity is a number that tells you how many people have recently sold that particular product. Generally speaking, the higher the gravity, the better your chances of getting a sale. Make sure the product you choose has the gravity of at least 50.

On the other hand, commission percentage tells you how much you will earn for each sale. The higher the percentage, the better. I usually pick products which have above 50%.

The other stats are not that important, for now – just find something with a high gravity and high commission percentage. Once you do, click on the »Promote« button.

3. Copy the affiliate link inside an empty notepad file and paste it on your page

When you click on the button, you will be given the unique link code we talked about earlier.

We need to copy this link and paste it on the page where we intend to promote the chosen product. Obviously, we don’t want to leave such an ugly looking link on our website because no one will want to click on it. This can also be solved, using anchor text.

Anchor text is the text part of the link. In other words, when a link says “Click Here”, its anchor text is “Click Here”, and its URL can be any website you choose. Lucky for us, WordPress allows you to build anchored links very easily.

Simply write the desired anchor text as if you would normally write a piece of text (for example, “Click Here”), then select it and click on the icon that looks like this:

Now just paste in the ugly affiliate link and click OK.

4. You’re done!

Once the link is installed on your page, you’re good to go. Of course, you will need to place it strategically so you get the best possible click through rate, but that’s essentially it.

You will earn commissions for every person who visits your website, clicks on the link and buys the product you are promoting.

Once the traffic starts flowing in (which we’ll be dealing with in the next couple of tutorials), the sales are inevitable! Then it’s just a matter of tweaking and testing…

If you want to see how many people are clicking through your affiliate links and buying the products, you must log in to your Clickbank account, and select REPORTING, but there’s no need to worry about that just yet, because we haven’t yet started getting real traffic.

Until next time, have a great day!

Google has a unique program which allows webmasters to make money by placing tiny pieces of codes on their websites, which then appear as random advertisements. If the visitors arrive at your website and click on your ads – you earn a small amount of money for each click.

The amount of money per click depends solely on the niche and the keywords you’ve chosen.

Although it may seem very small initially (<$1 in most cases), by the end of the month (with enough traffic), it can add up to a decent and, most importantly, regular flow of income.

How to set up Google Adsense?

Setting up Google Adsense is really simple as Google has a great support center which guides you step by step through the entire process. Also, if you’ve already created an account with Google (Google Analytics), you can use that same account to log into Adsense.

1. To access Adsense, visit https://www.google.com/adsense

Once you arrive at the page, search for »Sign up Now« link. When you click on it, you will be guided through a simple setup process which will ask you to fill in the required details…

Note that it can take up to several weeks for your newly created adsense account to be approved by Google, however, it usually takes much less (~ 2-3 days). You will receive a confirmation e-mail when it’s set up and ready for use.

2. When your account is approved, visit https://www.google.com/adsense once again.

This time, instead of clicking the »Sign up Now« link, log in straight to your account. Now it’s time to design the layout of the ads that you want to place on your website.

While you don’t have any influence on the actual content of the ads, you can choose the size, colors and transparency so it fits your website theme.

The ad creation process is best explained here: https://www.google.com/adsense/support/

Follow the steps outlined there, and once you’re done setting it up, copy the html code of your ad and paste it somewhere inside an empty notepad file.

Hint: When choosing the size and shape of your ads, select something that’s around 120 pixels wide, so it can fit inside the sidebar of your website.

3. Go to your WP dashboard and open up Appearance / Widgets

Although the ad codes can be placed anywhere on the site, they seem to work best when embedded inside widgets. Widgets are small programmed objects inside your sidebars which can be configured as you wish. For this purposes, we’re going to use the ordinary text widget.

To install a text widget, simply drag and drop it from the widget area to the sidebar area.

Now just click on it and fill in the desired title for your widget (not mandatory), and in the body of the widget, paste the code from the notepad file. Hit Save/Update and it’s done!

You can see how it looks like by visiting your website’s URL and refreshing the homepage a couple of times (sometimes it takes a while for the ads to become effective).

All of your Adsense stats, earnings and everything else can be tracked from your Google Adsense account. Also, if you’d like to change the ad format at any time, you can do it there.

By this point, we have successfully built up a website, we’ve configured all the settings and published some valuable content for our readers – and now it’s time to make some money!

There are several easy ways to make money from your website. You can either sell your own (virtual) products, you can sell other people’s products (affiliate marketing), or you can place Google ads on your website and get paid each time a visitor clicks on one of them.

The choice is yours. In this tutorial, we’re going to cover the two easiest and most popular ways to make money online – Google Adsense and Affiliate Marketing.

Did you know that Google uses millions of tiny automated robots called »crawlers«?

These crawlers constantly crawl the web, indexing and scanning all the websites they come across. Your job, as a responsible webmaster, is to ensure that your website is easily crawled.

How do you accomplish this?

The first thing you should do is create a sitemap. A sitemap is a simple XML file that contains the names and pathways of all the pages on your website. When Google crawler visits your site, it looks at the sitemap and then knows where all the other pages are located.

While your site is new and has only a couple of pages, a sitemap is not necessary. But as your site grows and matures, it has more and more pages, and thus makes it increasingly harder for crawlers to analyze your site as quickly as possible – and this is bad for SEO.

How to install a Google sitemap?

Since we’re using WordPress, we can use a free plugin that creates a Google sitemap for us in seconds… The one I use is called Google XML Sitemaps and it is very easy to set up.

Click on Plugins / Add New and type in: “Google XML Sitemaps”. You’ll get tons of different results, but the one we’re really after looks like this:

This plugin will create a sitemap for us and notify all the major search engines (Google, Yahoo and Bing) about it. After you install the plugin, make sure you click “Activate Plugin”.

Once it is activated, you should see the plugin link under the »Settings« section of your WP dashboard. Go ahead and click on it to access its functions.

You will notice a message that says that the sitemap wasn’t built yet. Click on the link to build it for the first time…

Voila – it’s done! You should now be able to access it by typing in the URL:

www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml

You should re-build your Google sitemap each time you add a new page. To do this, simply access the plugin (as demonstrated earlier), only this time click on »rebuild the sitemap«.

This was a very short tutorial but a very important one as well. Remember, if we want Google to gives us what we want (rankings), we must give Google what it wants.

See you in the next tutorial!

Hi there and hope you’re doing great!

Last time we learned how to write, optimize and publish content on our website. By now, you should at least have one (homepage) article written and published.

The next logical step would be to bring in traffic and monetize our website, but before we do that, we must first set up some sort of »traffic tracking« device, so we know that people are actually visiting our website! That’s where the Google Analytics comes in.

Google analytics is a free tracking device from Google which allows us to track everything from the number of visitors, to the duration of their visit, their nationalities, how they reached our site, what they clicked on, even their operating systems and screen resolutions.

It’s also quite easy to set up & we’re gonna cover it step by step:

1. Visit http://www.google.com/analytics/ and click “Sign Up Now”

Now if you don’t already have a Google account (e-mail, youtube or adsense), you may be asked to first create an account with them, which is very simple – just follow the instructions.

Otherwise, you will be taken through a simple registration process that will ask you to enter your website’s URL (they already fill in the http:// part for you), set up your website’s name, your country and some personal details. You will also have to agree to their TOS.

Once you’re done with registration, you will get a tiny piece of code from Google, which you have to copy and paste in a Notepad, because we’re going to need it for the second step.

2. Go to your WP dashboard

Once you’re logged in, look for the »Appearance« tab in the left sidebar and underneath it, click on »Editor«. Don’t get freaked out! Yes, this is a HTML editor and NO – you don’t have to be a computer genius to do this task right.

In the right sidebar, look for a link that says »footer« or »footer.php« and open it. Now, in the code infront of you, look for a piece that says:

Once you find it, all you have to do is copy the code from your notepad file (the Google Analytics code) and paste it just before the
part!

Once you’ve pasted it, click on Save/Update and you’re done. That wasn’t so hard, was it?

If you have done all the steps properly, your Google Analytics account will automatically detect your website’s code and the visitor stats should start appearing. Just give it ~ 24 hours.

Once again, you access your GA account by visiting http://www.google.com/analytics/ and clicking on the big blue »Access Analytics« button.

Please note that, once your Google Analytics starts showing data, it will most likely show only 1 visitor (which is you), because we still haven’t started getting in significant traffic.

In case you’ve waited 24 hours, and you’re sure you’ve done all the steps correctly and it still isn’t showing any data, contact the Google support team and they’ll be glad to help you out.

Next time we’ll be looking into ways to monetize our website!

Have a great day and see you soon.

This is a very important piece of the puzzle, so please try to pay special attention, because content is the »magic ingredient« that converts visitors into paying customers.

How to write your content?

There are two basic ways of writing your content – either by yourself, or by outsourcing it.

Here are some pros and cons of both:

Writing the content yourself

PROs:

- It doesn’t cost you a penny
- It’s the best way to ensure the quality of your content
- You’re the only one who knows what your readers really want

CONs:

- It can be very time consuming
- If you don’t have passion for your niche, you will get bored very quickly
- Articles that are written without passion will not grab the attention of your readers

Outsourcing the content

PROs:

- Saves you a lot of time so you can focus on other things
- You can have large quantity of content written in a relatively short period

CONs

- It costs money to outsource your content, the better the quality – the higher the price
- You can never be sure of the quality until you try the writer out
- Many freelance writers require payment in advance

Where can you hire a freelance writer?

There are a lot of websites that specialize in outsourcing, such as odesk.com and elance.com

These sites allow you to post the job you want done for you (in this case content writing) and then the writers (who are interested in the ad) present their offers to you, so you can choose.

When choosing, make sure you don’t pick the cheapest writer available, and also make sure they’ve got enough writing experience and reputation on the website. Request sample articles.

Once you find a good writer, establish a friendly relationship so you can use him in the future.
Guidelines for writing content

Whether you decide to outsource it or write it yourself, there are some general guidelines you should follow. There are two things we want to accomplish with our content:

1)	Engage the reader and motivate him to take action
2)	Make the content Google-friendly so we can get free traffic

What’s the best way to engage your readers? – Provide value!

If your articles provide enough value, you will establish »trust« with your visitors. Once you have their trust, you can make recommendations. And trust+recommendations = $$$!!!

Think about this. Would you still be reading this article if you weren’t getting some kind of value from it? I don’t think so! You would probably search for the information elsewhere.

Also, try to keep the language simple. People don’t like reading fancy expressions and many of your visitors won’t be so fluent in English. So remember – simple gets the job done.

Before you even begin writing – put yourself in the shoes of your visitors. What do they want to know? What questions can you answer for them? What »value« can you provide?

Remember – there is no such reality as »something for nothing«. If you want your visitors to give you money, you must first be willing to offer them some kind of value first.

How to make your content Google-friendly?

Making your content Google-friendly is a part of a process better known as SEO (Search Engine Optimization). This process itself is very important and we will be paying a great deal of attention to it later on in the course. There are two parts of SEO – onpage and offpage.

Today we’ll be dealing with on-page SEO. It may sound scary and complicated, but in reality it is very simple and many people overlook its importance, thus not ranking well in Google.

All the on-page SEO revolves around are the »keywords« you want to rank for. That’s why we did such an extensive keyword research early on in the course. It’s time to revisit them…

The basic idea is to put your keywords in the strategic places on the page, which tells Google that you website is relevant to the keyword and gets you a better position in the search results.

You can write your articles either directly in WordPress (by logging in and going to Pages / Add new page), or in any other word processor. The same principles apply everywhere.

If you want your website to rank well in Google, you must configure:

1. Your headings

Google gives great importance to the headings of your articles… You must make sure that your headings contain your keywords. For example, if your keyword is »dog training«, your headings could be: »Why is dog training important?« or »Where to learn dog training«?
How to insert headings?

If you’re in WordPress, you can change your text format from paragraph to heading 1, 2, 3… using the toolbar (or the so-called »kitchen sink«). If you’re using some other word processor to write your articles, look for a tab that allows you to change the text format to headings.

Heading 1 is the most important heading to optimize, followed by heading 2. There’s no need to use other headings, as they carry less and less importance to Google.

2. Keyword density

Make sure you mention your keyword throughout the article around 1-3 times per 100 words (i.e. try to keep the density between 1-3%). Do not overdo it, because you can get penalized and lose all your rankings for doing so. So, if your keyword was »dog training«, you would mention it in sentences like this: »Only dog training can teach your dog to roll over.«

3. Bold, underline or italize your keyword

In Google’s eyes, words that are written in bold, underlined or italic format carry more weight than words that are not formatted in any way. That’s why you want to bold, underline or italize your keyword (but remember to do this only once!).

4. Word count

Make sure your articles are at least 300 words long. Anything less than that is bad for SEO.

5. Image ALT tags

If you’re using images inside your articles (which I highly recommend), you’re going to need to configure their alt tags. What are »alt tags« you might ask?

Well, some people choose to »turn off« images in their browsers, so they can surf faster, or for any other reason. So when they visit a page, they only see alt tags instead of images.

How to edit image alt tags?

When you’re inside the WordPress page editor, simply choose to add image in the upper left corner. Then all you have to do is follow instructions to upload the image and once you do, you can configure its settings and insert your keyword inside the alt attribute. Easy as a cake!

6. Title and »meta stuff«

Remember the »All in One SEO« plugin we installed? It’s time to turn it on. In your WP dashboard, find “All in One SEO” link under the Settings and click on it.

First of all we need to enable it, so check the box next to enable. Next, inside the “home title” box, enter the title of your website (which should contain your keywords). This is the same title that comes up in Google when people search for your website, so choose carefully.

“Home description” is the description of your website and should also contain your keyword.
Under “home keywords”, enter as many variations of your keyword as you can think of. Just don’t overdo it, 5-6 home keywords is enough.

Remember to click save (or update), once you’re done editing the options.

That’s it – you’ve successfully mastered the on-page part of SEO, congratulations!

Your assignment for the next time is to write an article for your homepage, do the on-page SEO and publish it (using the Add New Page option in WP). Once you publish it, go back to »All pages« and delete (or trash) the Sample Page.

At this point, you may want to re-visit the »Reading« sub-section of »Settings« in WP and make sure that the »Static page« now points to the newly created article.

If everything went fine, the article should now be displayed on your homepage!

For best results, you should be writing at least 2 articles a week. If you can do more, do more, but tend to write at least 2 per week. This gives Google an impression that your site is active.

Note: You don’t need to change the »Static page« again, just once for the homepage article

Have fun and see you again in the next tutorial!

One of the (many) great things about WordPress is that you can completely redesign your site’s visual appearance in a moment’s notice, and the best thing is – it’s completely free!

There are literally thousands of themes and plugins to choose from, and they all serve to provide a better user experience for your new website.

Why are themes important?

Themes can literally »make or break« your website. Did you know that visitors get their first impression of your website within the first 5-6 seconds? That’s right, you have 5 seconds.

And usually, the first thing that pops into their eyes is… your theme. I can’t begin to tell you how many ugly themes I’ve seen over the years, and although the content may be really good and useful, it just hurts my eyes too much to continue reading the site.

How to choose a good theme?

There are a couple of things you should pay attention to:

- Make sure your background makes the text easy readable. White background with black text is always the preferred way. Don’t give your visitors a headache…

- If you’re choosing a theme with built in images, make sure the images are actually relevant to the niche you are targeting. You can’t really sell dog products using a cat theme…

- Make sure the theme comes with at least 1 sidebar. Sidebars can be very useful for placing various ads, navigation panels, etc. You can always turn them off later if you don’t need them.

- Make sure the text font and size is easy readable as well. People don’t like letters that are too big or too small, or have a weird font. Just try to keep things as simple as possible.

That’s it basically. You alone will have to decide what theme is best for you, but these are some general guidelines that you should follow to get the best results.

Free vs Paid Themes

While there are hundreds of free good looking WordPress themes, some webmasters prefer to use paid themes, because they generally have a slightly better design and more options.

This is entirely up to you, if you can’t find a decent free theme (which I will show you how in just a bit), you may want to consider purchasing a paid theme.

One of the best place I know for buying paid wordpress themes is Themeforest.net

They have a vast collection of wordpress themes, with prices ranging from around $10 all the way up to $100. Sometimes you can find a really good looking theme for a very low price.

Once you purchase a theme, you will receive a RAR (or ZIP) file which contains all the theme files necessary for the installation. You will also get a developer’s license so you can use the same theme for future websites, over and over again.

On the other hand, if you choose to go with the free themes, search the Google for: »free wordpress themes« and you should come up with hundreds of websites on which you can download free wordpress themes. Many of them will even have a demo preview so you can see what they look like prior to downloading. All wordpress themes come in a RAR file.

Either way, once you have a RAR file on your hard disk, we must install it on your website.

Ok, first you need to login to your WordPress dashboard. Remember how to do this? Simply add /wp-admin at the end of your URL and press enter.

After you login, in the left sidebar, search for a section called »Appearance«. Once you click on it, you will be able to choose to manage or install new themes.

Notice that you can also browse for free wordpress themes here (in case you still haven’t found a suitable one). Otherwise, look for a tab that says »Upload«.

Now all you have to do is locate the RAR (or ZIP) file on your hard disk and click »Install«.

Once you activate the theme, it will immediately become effective, which you can check by visiting your site’s URL. That’s it – no nuclear physics here either!

What are plugins and how to install them?

Plugins are small add-ons which give your wordpress website even more flexibility and functionalities. Some of them are very useful and should definitely be a part of your kit.

Just like themes, there are free and paid plugins… However, for your needs, free plugins will do more than fine. Here’s how to configure your plugins:

- Back to the WP dashboard. In the left sidebar, find a »Plugin« section and click on it. Here you will be able to search for plugins and install them.

- For now, we will be needing just two basic plugins: »All in one SEO« & »Aksimet«. Type the names in the search box (separately) and click »Install« under the correct plugin name.

- You have just installed two very important pugins. One will greatly enhance your search engine visibility and the other one will prevent your website from getting spammed.

- Once you install them, it is important to actually »Activate« them. This is done by going back to your »Plugins« section, , finding your plugin and clicking »Activate«!

- You still need to learn how to set up the »All in One SEO« plugin, but we will do that in one of the upcoming tutorials. The important thing is that you get it installed.

Now that you have a nice looking theme and you’ve mastered plugins, feel free to play around! Try to explore the full functionalities of your theme (widgets, sidebars, etc.)

In the next tutorial, we’ll be filling your website with some quality content. Take care!

Hi again, hope you’re doing great – today we’re going to finally start dressing your site up!

Remember when I told you that you could build professional websites within minutes…?

Today you’re going to see just how easy it is, using a free CMS platform called WordPress.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a world famous CMS (content management system) that is extremely popular among webmasters all over the world. The main reason being that it is very user friendly and allows you to build highly customizable websites in a very short period of time.

It is also very good for beginners because they no longer have to learn the HTML & PHP programming languages in order to build visually attractive websites. The WordPress interface is packed with all kinds of tools that allow you to do this with a click of a mouse…

How to install WordPress?

One of the main reasons why Hostgator is my favorite host provider is because it includes a free tool which allows me to install WordPress on my websites automatically, so I don’t have to go through the manual process which is relatively hard and time consuming…

The tool is called Fantastico and it is located in your website’s control panel. To access it, type in your URL in your browser and add /cpanel at the end – www.yourdomain.com/cpanel

It will ask you to login using the account details that have been sent to you by Hostgator via the e-mail address you used to register with. Type in the account information and press login.

Once you enter, you will see a whole bunch of tools that came with your hosting package, but right now we need Fantastico De Luxe – look for the blue smiley icon. It should look like this:

See it? Go ahead and click on it. In the left column of the newly opened page, you should see a section called »Blogs« and under it – »Wordpress«. Click to enter the setup module.

We want a »New Installation«, so that’s what we’ll choose to go with next.

There are three steps to this installation, and they’re all very simple:

1st step

The installation location of WordPress will be the newly purchased domain. Make sure you leave the »Install in directory« field blank, because we want to install in the root directory!

Select the administrator username and password of your own choice, but don’t forget to store it somewhere safe because you’re going to need it later to log into your WordPress interface.

The admin nickname can be different to the administrator username if you wish… Proceed to enter your e-mail address, site name and description of your choice. Once done, hit »Install«.

2nd step

Here you will see some information about »Mysql« and the access URL. You typically don’t need this at the moment, but you can save it for future reference. Click »Finish Installation«.

3rd step

There is no 3rd step – you are all done, see how easy that was?

In a couple of moments, you should see WordPress installed on your domain when you try to access it using your browser. Once it’s fully installed, we must configure its settings.

Configuring WordPress

When WordPress is fully installed, you should see a default WP theme on your domain. Don’t worry, there are plenty of free themes to choose from and I’ll show you how to do that later…

To configure WordPress, you must add the /wp-admin suffix at the end of your domain name.

For example: www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin

Now use the administrator username and password that you entered in the 1st step of the WordPress installation process. Upon logging, you should see something like this:

This, my friend, is called the WordPress Dashboard and this is where all the magic happens!

It is very easy to navigate around the WP dashboard and you should have no problems getting familiar with it fairly quickly… But first, let’s configure the basic settings of WordPress.

In the last section of the left column, there is a link for »Settings«, click on it.

Enter your desired site title and tagline, which will be visible on your homepage. Notice that your WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) is without »www« by default. If you want your website to have a »www« prefix, insert it as shown on the image above.

- Your »Settings« column is now expanded and looks like this:

- Click on the »Reading« sub-section.

Choose »A static page« as shown on the image above and select the front page (usually it’s called »Sample Post« or something like that, because we didn’t create our own page yet)

- Click on the »Discussion« sub-section.

»Allow people to post comments on new articles« – uncheck this box if you do not want visitors to be able to post comments on your website.

- Click on the »Permalinks« sub-section.

Check the »Custom Structure« option and write /%postname%/ in the box next to it, just like shown on the image above. This will make your site structure appear much more natural.

Note: Remember to click »Update« after each change in settings you make.

We are done!

That’s it for today, to recap once again:

1) We talked about the advantages of using WordPress for our website
2) We installed WordPress (WP) on our domain using Fantastico De Luxe
3) We configured the basic settings of our new WordPress website

In the next tutorial, we’ll be covering themes and plugins, and how you can use them to make your website appear very visually attractive, clean and professional.

Until tomorrow, have a great day!
